Getting married in Arkansas after a K-1 visa: license, church ceremony and the certificate that makes it official

· 3 min read

With a K-1 visa, you must marry within 90 days of arriving in the US. If you do not, you lose your legal status and you cannot apply for a green card the normal way.

We married on August 2, 2026, one month after I arrived, in the church where my wife grew up. The steps were very different from Turkey.

My timeline

  • July 3, 2026: I arrived on a K-1 visa. The 90 day clock started
  • Before the wedding: We got the marriage license from the county
  • August 2: The ceremony in church. The pastor signed the license
  • After the ceremony: We took the signed license back to the county and got the certified marriage certificate
  • September 1: That certificate went into my green card package

How it works in Turkey

In Turkey, you apply at the marriage office of the municipality. On the day, a marriage official marries you in the municipal wedding hall, and you leave married. One place, one official.

How it works in Arkansas

In Arkansas, the government and the ceremony are separate steps.

1. The marriage license

First, you go to the county clerk's office and apply for a marriage license. Both of you go, with ID. They give you a large paper, bigger than a normal sheet.

This license is not a marriage yet. It is permission to get married.

2. The ceremony

Then you need someone allowed to perform marriages. For us, that was the pastor of the church.

Our ceremony was simple. No table, everyone standing. My wife stood right in front of me, and her father was next to us. The pastor read from the book, asked each of us if we accepted the other in sickness and in health, and then said: you may kiss the bride.

In the end, the pastor does what the marriage official does in Turkey. The difference is where it happens.

3. The signature

After the ceremony, the pastor signs the license.

4. Back to the county

This is the step people forget. A religious ceremony alone is not a legal marriage. You take the signed license back to the county office, and they record it and give you a certified marriage certificate.

That certified certificate is the document you need for everything after: the green card application, the name on documents, and for us, registering the marriage in Turkey.

Tip: order more than one certified copy. We needed them for USCIS and for the Turkish consulate, and a copy made at home is not accepted.

The day itself

We did not plan formal clothes. I did not even bring a suit from Turkey. We only wanted to match. That morning we went to the mall to buy my clothes to go with her dress.

Then, back at home, we could not find the dress. Three closets, all full, no dress. We still have not found it. So we put together a similar outfit and went.

Her parents, her nephew and her sister-in-law were there. Her brothers were working and could not come. No one from my family could be there, and that was the hard part. On a happy day, you want your family next to you. I was so nervous that I was sweating the whole time, and my wife kept touching my back and laughing.

What I would tell another K-1 couple

  1. Count the 90 days from your arrival date, not from the visa date.
  2. Call your county clerk first. Ask what ID they need, the fee, and how long the license is valid. These rules differ between states and counties.
  3. Choose an officiant early. A pastor, a judge or another person allowed to marry people in your state.
  4. Do not forget to return the license. The certified certificate comes from the county, not from the church.
  5. Order several certified copies. You will need them for immigration.
  6. Check whether your home country needs an apostille on the certificate to register the marriage there.

Summary

  • K-1 couples must marry within 90 days of arrival.
  • In Arkansas: license from the county, ceremony, officiant signs, license goes back to the county.
  • The certified certificate from the county is the legal proof, and it goes into the green card application.
