Refused a US tourist visa twice after ten second interviews: what I learned

· 3 min read

Before I came to the US on a K-1 visa, I was refused a US visa twice. Both times I did everything I thought was right. Both times the interview was over in about ten seconds.

If you just got a refusal, this post is for you.

The situation

My girlfriend was American. We had been together for years, she had visited me in Turkey many times, and we had met in other countries too. I wanted to visit her in the US, so I applied for a B-2 tourist visa at the US Embassy in Ankara.

She sponsored me. She wrote a letter. I would stay at her home, and the address was in the application.

The first interview

I prepared a file of 150 to 200 pages. At that time, I had a stable job, and I brought every document anyone could ask for: job letter, bank papers, her letter, her address.

The interview lasted about ten seconds. Three questions:

  • Why are you going?
  • Where will you stay?
  • How many days will you stay?

I answered all three clearly, in English, without stuttering. The officer refused the visa and gave me the refusal paper.

The second interview

The next year, we applied again, again with her sponsorship, and with even more documents.

Same result. The officer did not even look at my papers. Ten seconds of questions, then a refusal.

Why it probably happened

I still do not know the exact reason. Nobody explains it in detail at the window. But this is what I understand now.

A tourist visa officer must start from one assumption: every applicant plans to stay in the US, unless the applicant shows strong ties to home. That is the rule in US law. Your job is to prove you will come back.

For a young man whose partner lives in the US, that is very hard to prove. A job and a bank account in Turkey are good, but the officer sees a strong reason to stay. Maybe that was enough.

And the documents? In my two interviews, nobody opened them. The decision seemed to come from the answers and the application form. Papers may help in a longer interview. In mine, they did nothing.

What finally worked: the right visa

The tourist visa was the wrong visa for our situation. We were not tourists. We wanted to live together.

So my girlfriend, by then my fiancée, filed a K-1 fiancé(e) petition. That visa is made for exactly our case: a US citizen and a foreign partner who plan to marry. With a K-1, the officer does not need to believe you will go home. The question is different: is the relationship real?

After about six years together, we could prove that easily. The interview in Ankara had four simple questions, and the visa was approved at the window. I tell that story here: My K-1 visa timeline from Turkey.

The two earlier refusals did not stop the K-1.

What I would tell someone after a refusal

  1. Ask yourself if it is the right visa. If your real plan is to be with a partner in the US, a tourist visa may be the wrong tool.
  2. Do not lie to fix it. Every answer is recorded, and inconsistencies hurt later applications.
  3. Know that more papers are not always the answer. My second file was bigger and nothing changed.
  4. Strong ties to home matter most for a tourist visa: job, property, family, travel history.
  5. Be honest about earlier refusals in every later application.
  6. For a complicated history, talk to an immigration lawyer. For the K-1, we used one, exactly because of these two refusals.

Summary

  • Two tourist visa refusals, both after about ten seconds.
  • A 200 page file did not help. The officer did not look at it.
  • A tourist visa officer must assume you will stay. With a US partner, proving otherwise is hard.
  • The K-1 visa matched our real plan, and it was approved.
